A residential subsection of Sheepshead Bay, Madison is found just to the south of Midwood. It's named for the high school, which is called James Madison High School. The borders of Madison include Avenue U to the south, Nostrand Avenue to the east, Kings Highway to the north and Ocean Avenue to the west. The ZIP code for the neighborhood is 11229 and the area is served by Brooklyn Community Board 15.
Separating Brooklyn from the eastern section of Coney Island, Sheepshead Bay is found between Manhattan Beach, Coney Island and Sea Gate. The bay includes a mouth about 1 mile wide found to the southwest of Marine Park in Brooklyn. This area is also a part of Brooklyn Community Board 15.
Sheepshead Bay applies to both the bay and the neighborhood found to the north of the bay. It was named for the sheepshead, which is a fish found in the waters. While the fish is rate today, it's still caught out of the local waters on occasion.
Originally, the bay was the easterly entrance to Coney Island Creek. However, in the 1930s, the filling-in of the waterway took this away. In addition, shore Parkway was constructed as a portion of the Belt Parkway, which eliminated the waterway access.
The bay was also made to be deeper, wider and it was bullheaded on the western end. Today, it's home to many recreational fishing fleets, but those have been disappearing over the years. Many are being replaced by dinner boats. In addition, Sheepshead Bay is home to the Holocaust Memorial Park, which is used for commemorative events throughout the year.
The last decade of the 20th century saw the area experience a real estate boom. Lundy Brothers seafood restaurant was reopened but closed again in 2007. It's now a grocery store. Several restaurants and nightclubs have opened along with waterfront including Paradise and Baku Palace. Many of these are Soviet-style businesses due to a large number of Soviet immigrants coming to the Sheepshead Bay area. The neighborhood has also seen plenty of condominium development. There are also several piers with tour boats and active seafood markets throughout.
Sheepshead Bay is served by the following public schools.
• P.S. 52 (elementary)
• P.S. 206 (elementary)
• P.S. 254 (elementary)
• The Bay Academy
• JHS 14 Shell Bank Intermediate School
• James Madison High School
• Sheepshead Bay High School
Along with the public school, there are several private schools serving the area including:
• St. Mark's School
• St. Edmund's School
• Brooklyn Amity School
The neighborhood is also home to the Kingsborough Community College and part of the City University of New York. The police serving the neighborhood are found in the NYPD's 61t Precinct.
